ISO 45001:2018 Clause 7.3 Awareness

Clause 7.3 Breakdown

7.3 Awareness

Every worker should be aware of:

a.The OH&S policy and OH&S objectives;

b.Their contribution to the effectiveness of the OH&S management system, including the benefits of improved OH&S performance;

c.The implications and potential consequences of not conforming to the OH&S management system requirements;

d.Incidents and the outcomes of investigations that are relevant to them;

e.Hazards, OH&S risks and actions determined that are relevant to them;

f.the ability to remove themselves from work situations that they consider present an imminent and serious danger to their life or health, as well as the arrangements for protecting them from undue consequences for doing so.

It is common sense that workers who are unaware of the organization's OH&S management system are less likely to contribute to the achievements of OH&S objectives and thus place the effectiveness of the whole system in a precarious position.  Workers do not need to be appraised in the entire O&HS management system, but at least be aware of the requirements a. to f. listed above.

Workers are generally better aware of the OH&S hazards and risks within their own areas of activities and competency and thus have a clearer understanding of how they can influence a. to f. to contribute to the effectiveness of the O&HS management system.

Organizations should not forget that:

contractors,

sub-contractors,

agency staff,

lease workers,

freelances,

at-will,

zero-hours employees,

visitors, etc.,

will require to be made aware of O&HS risks they may be exposed to.  This can save costly mishaps and potential legal actions by any injured parties...
