ISO 45001-2018 section 3 Terms and Conditions

ISO 45001:2018 PDCA model

ISO 45001:2018 list a number of terms to aid interpretation of its requirements.

The mind-map below show the list of these terms and their definitions and attempts to give a more visual oversight of how they relate to other aspects of the standards.

ISO 45001:2018 3 Terms and Definitions

If we look at term 3.36 corrective action we can see that it has a definition of:

'action to eliminate the cause(s) of a nonconformity (3.34) or an incident (3.35) and to prevent recurrence'.

However, to understand it fully it refers us to 3.34 nonconformity and 3.35 incident.  Extrapolating the definitions for these two terms would give us a fuller definitions of:

'action to eliminate the cause(s) of a non-fulfilment of a requirement (3.8) or an occurrence arising out of, or in the course of, work that could or does result in injury and ill health (3.18) and to prevent recurrence'.

Now we find that two more terms have been introduced.  Applying the same logic we now have a definition for 3.36 of:

'action to eliminate the cause(s) of a non-fulfilment of a need or expectation that is stated, generally implied or obligatory or an occurrence arising out of, or in the course of, work that could or does result in adverse effect on the physical, mental or cognitive condition of a person and to prevent recurrence'.

My personal favourite is 3.32 Audit which has a definition of:

'systematic, independent and documented process (3.25) for obtaining audit evidence and evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which the audit criteria are fulfilled'.

This extrapolates to:

'systematic, independent and documented set of interrelated or interacting activities which transforms inputs into outputs for obtaining audit evidence and evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which the audit criteria are fulfilled'.

That's all well and good, however I'm not to sure the word 'audit' should be use in the definition of itself, not a great fan of circular references (even less so in excel), sometimes the circles just keep getting bigger...
